Atole De Avena - A Cozy Postpartum Mug of Love
Mmmm, this warm postpartum drink is soothing to both the stomach and soul.
This recipe was first taught to me by Brenda Amaya during my Wild Ginger Community Herbal Center’s Birthkeeper Program. Its simplicity, ease, and comfort that it offers makes for the perfect warm drink to bring to any mother in bed. This would also be fantastic for littles whose bellies need a little sleepytime snack!
Are you ready for the easiest, creamiest, most comforting drink for your postpartum nourishment?
Here’s what you need:
oats, preferably organic
cinnamon
brown sugar
a good, healthy salt
Directions: Pour a few handfuls of uncooked oatmeal into your blender or food processor, along with a spoonful or two of brown sugar, a few generous shakes of cinnamon, and a good pinch of salt. Grind together for a few minutes. I love using my food processor for this, as it leaves a little texture that I enjoy!
To make: Simmer 2 tablespoons of oat mixture with 1 cup of water/milk, stirring often to help prevent burning. Once it’s nice, thick and creamy, pour into a mug and let cool to a warm temperature.
This can be enjoyed as often as you love, and makes for such a nourishing and easy way to fill your cup. It’s great for nursing moms, especially during the middle of the night when you’re up with baby, and can be easily enjoyed when you only have one free hand.
Scientifically, Oats are a brain, blood, endocrine system, reproductive system, and nervous system tonic. They’re full of vitamins and minerals, and the perfect thing to reach for during seasons of weakness, stress, or exhaustion.
Oats are calming, nourishing, moisturizing, and the perfect cozy thing to bring a little comfort!
I pray you enjoy this drink, that it brings restoration and comfort, and that you’ll remember it when you have a sweet friend in need.
Much love.
