Herb-Infused Witch Hazel for Postpartum Healing
Easy Herb-Infused Witch Hazel Recipe
Step 1: Choose your favorite herbs.
Some of my favorite herbs to use for postpartum healing include:
Plantain
Lemon Balm
Calendula
Yarrow
Chamomile
Lavender
Comfrey Leaf
St. John’s Wort
Rose
For this recipe, I used:
1 tbsp Calendula
2 tsp Yarrow
1 tsp Lemon Balm
1 tsp Plantain
1 tsp Lavender
1 tsp Chamomile
You can use any combination of your favorite herbs!
*Be sure to do your research when choosing, or work alongside a qualified herbalist.
Step 2: Pour witch hazel over your herbs and let it steep for 2 weeks.
When picking out a Witch Hazel, be sure to check the label for 14% alcohol content. Many witch hazel products on the shelf have a high content of alcohol (15-30%). We’re looking for quality here!
In a clean jar, pour your witch hazel over your herbs, leaving 2 inches for expansion.
Using parchment paper in between your lid and jar to prevent rusting, or using a plastic lid, cap your jar and give it a good shake. You herbs will absorb some of the liquid and expand.
After letting it rest for a few minutes, come back and top it off with a little more witch hazel. You want to make sure all of your herbs are well covered.
Store your herbal infusion in a dark place for at least 2 weeks, giving it a good shake daily. Your witch hazel will slowly take on the healing properties of your herbs, and will soon be ready to strain!
You can use cheesecloth, a reusable tea bag/nut milk bag, or coffee filter to strain your herbs. Give your herbs one final squeeze to get all that goodness out, and return them to the earth.
This recipe is great for spritzing directly on your skin, spritzing on a cloth wipe or soft tissue paper to use as a wipe, and/or dousing your padsicles with! Happy healing, sweet friend!
